Review of Paterson (2016) by Gary G — 09 Feb 2017
This is a slow, artsy, slice-of-life movie that is never boring and you spend a lot of time thinking about afterward. It is what the movies, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight, pretend to be while boring the hell out of us.
The movie is more magical than La-La Land because all its magic takes place in the coincidences of everyday life. It demonstrates the everyday creativity of ordinary people rather than "stars".
It take big dramatic themes, such as tragedy striking because of a broken promise, and puts them into such real circumstances that you barely notice them. It is purposefully slow but always entertaining.
Half of the fun was the comments of the audience during the film during its long silences. One of the most memorable film-going experiences ever!
