Review of Paris, Texas (1984) by Jeff H — 10 Oct 2007
I didn't like this film much when I first saw it at the Luna on the big screen in 1999. I found it too "oblique", whatever that means. But I watched it again recently on DVD and I loved it.
It is the ultimate story of family breakdown and desolation. Travis, played by Harry Dean Stanton, emerges from the desert after walking out on his beautiful wife and young son many years before. His brother has raised his son as his own and his wife is missing in action.
Paris, Texas is an understated but profound epic awash in beautiful imagery.
