Review of Paris, Texas (1984) by Darryl J — 03 Sep 2008
This movie is often compered to The Searchers. I can see why but I've seen The Searchers twice and it didn't come close to the impact that this left me with. The way WIm Wenders constructs this movie is amazing. It starts off making you think that it's going to be a certain type of movie but smoothly transforms itself into something even greater. I think that's a big reason of my love for it.
It's one of the most heartbreaking and heartwarming movies I've ever seen. It works so well,in my opinion, because it never amps up the emotion. It presents us with these characters and it lets us make up our own minds about them. It never sways us to believe that we should hate this person, love this one, etc. It reminded me of Tokyo Story. Both of those movies could have been your average melodramatic drama but they both transcend that and become something that stays and touches you long after after it's over.
