Review of Paris, Texas (1984) by Kevin U — 09 Mar 2010
The first half is dominated by the acting strength of Harry Dean Stanton and Dean Stockwell. It drew me in, and I became immersed in the characters and mood. In a way, I wasn't concerned about the reason behind Travis's disappearance. I got the feeling that Wenders wanted us to concentrate more on the characters on screen and their current actions. I was moved by the scene with the home movie and the sweetness of Travis's attempts to entertain his estranged son.
When the film moved into the second and third acts I was felt less involved somehow and lost a little connection with Travis as he met with his past. The final scenes were directed with great skill and Stanton especially shone but I preferred the first hour.
