Review of Paris, Texas (1984) by Mike L — 04 Dec 2015
Harry Dean Stanton delivers an Oscar worthy, powerhouse performance as Travis in this exceptional adaptation of Sam Sheppard's story. Methodically paced, the film winds through the discovery of the tumultuous past of a drifter, one shrouded in conflict and the unbearable loss of love.
Complementing the cast, a young Hunter Carson is irrepressibly honest as the long left, hesitant son and Nastassja Kinski is haunting as the love of Travis' life. The scenes of reunion play out so beautifully as to be kin to true art.
It is a heartbreaking journey through a complicated life, and a love so strong that it cannot survive. This one is on my short-list of the greatest films of the 20th century.
