Review of Paris Je T'aime (2006) by Marco M — 02 Aug 2010
'Paris je t'aime' is a veritable cornucopia of love stories; a collection of tales that depict the many faces of Paris, each made by top international directors (Gus van Sandt, the Coen brothers, Alfonso Cuaron, Wes Craven, etc.
) and played out by fantastic actors (Juliette Binoche, Gerard Depardieu, Natalie Portman, Steve Buschemi, Elijah Wood, etc.). As you would expect from a movie made out of shorts, not every vignette is particularly fulfilling, but the successes outnumber the misfires.
Each has its moments and they all merge to form a picture of Paris not all are familiar with: its joy, love, passion, and laughter, as well as its sadness, heartbreak, and crippling loneliness. The most touching stories are not always those of stereotypical romance but the comic and especially the bleak and sorrowful ones that illuminate a darker side of the city of lights.
Though uneven, it picks up steam in the second half and ends on an upbeat note and left me with a very satisfied feeling of appreciation for the journey.
