Review of Paris Je T'aime (2006) by Tobias X — 23 May 2012
Unlike the collective film SEPTEMBER 11, I think this is actually worth a viewing.
Don't really know how you rate a collective film made up of individual shorts. The segments are hit or miss. Some really good, some okay and others forgettable. I'll go over them individually from what I can remember;.
I liked these ones ;.
TOUR EIFFEL by Sylvain Chomet (this was my favorite, almost as good as THE RED BALLOON at times!).
TULLERIES by the Coen Brothers (Buscemi is hilarious and the Coen's craft is spectacular as always).
LOIN DU 16EME by Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas.
(topical and daring, nice french new wave feel).
FAUBOURG SAINT-DENIS by Tom Tykwer (great companion viewing with RUN LOLA RUN -1998).
14TH ARRONDISSEMENT by Alexander Payne (almost too sweet).
PARC MONCEAU by Alfonso Cuaron (another technical marvel of a long take. Very humorous).
QUARTIER LATIN by Gerard Depardieu (i wanted to watch this couple forever!).
PLACE DES VICTOIRES by Nobuhiro Suwa (very spiritual. very heartbreaking).
Didn't like these;.
LE MARAIS by Gus Van Sant.
(Van Sant is one of my favorite filmmakers, and this was quite turgid. Had potential to be funky fresh and daring).
PIGALLE by Richard LaGravenese.
(good performances, but really overwritten characters).
MONTMARTE by Bruno Podalydes.
(Real snoozer).
QUARTIER DES ENFANTS ROUGES by Olivier Assayas.
(Assayas? why so boring, mate?).
QUARTIER DE LA MADELIENE by Vincenzo Natali (Not flattering to the memory of LES VAMPIRES 1915.. Look, ma! Green screen! ).
PERE-LACHAISE by Wes Craven (feels right at home in the lame confines of something on the CW network. Ironically has the best setting of all of them).
PORTE DE CHOISY by Christopher Doyle (one of the greatest cinematographers ever crafted this mess. I almost hated this one).
