Review of Pariah (2011) by Lisa K — 11 Sep 2011
A promising debut from director Rees chronicling the internal struggle of a teenage lesbian within a family that is falling apart. The cast is very good, including former In Living Color actress Kim Wayans.
However, the film looks too much like other indie films in terms of style and the director overplays her hand a little too often - the film needs to be toned down; we get hit over the head with the point.
However, Rees does stray away from stereotyping her characters and shows a slice of life in the African-American community very much ignored in cinema.
