Review of Pariah (2011) by Sony J — 26 Dec 2011
It was so great seeing so many familiar faces in #PARIAH. The acting was superb, especially by Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Kim Wayans, & Charles Parnell. I was extremely impressed with Walker and Parnell performances.
As always, Chanté Marlena Lewis, Robbie Morgan, Shamika Cotton & Kymbali Craig made great use of their time on the screen and they immediately jumped out. Director Dee Rees did a great job showing a teenager juggling conflicting identities within a dysfunctional family and various friendships, while trying to find her voice and place in society.
The cinematography really established the tone of the film with it's camera composition and rich colors. It was like watching a live painting. Although there were some moments where the film seem to slow to a snail's pace, it rewarded you with an inside look of the underground Black gay culture in Brooklyn and how being gay is dealt with within certain conservative Black families and communities.
An outstanding debut by Rees, I'd definitely recommend this film.
