Review of Pariah (2011) by Roxanne R — 22 May 2012
Good film especially being the first project for writer and director Dee Rees. It was an official selection at the Sundance Film festival and won the GLAAD outstanding film award. The Indy film is about a 17 year old black girl named Alike (Adepero Oduye) that lives with ultra conservative middle class parents Audrey and Arthur (played by Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell).
Her mothers suspects Alike might be gay and tries at any cost to control her daughter's life and guide her in the "right" path. Sadly Audrey and Arthur's marriage is falling apart, he is barely home so the movie explores other issues besides the teen's homosexuality.
During all this turmoil, Alike meets a girl that she may be falling for and in spite of it all, Alike is determined to succeed, to rise above and make the right choices in life because after all she is not broken like her mother has her believe.
Again good job by first time writer/director Dee Rees on this film and the ending is very uplifting!
