Review of Parenthood (1989) by Russell G — 20 Jan 2012
This is a movie about family life that feels so entirely honest and true to life. It reminds us how messy life is and how wonderful that can be. It expresses how real families have real problems, sometimes lots of them, but no matter what problems may arise it is important to face them together as a loving family.
There are a number of very well developed characters and they each have their ups and downs, just like real people do. Steve Martin takes on this versatile role and does a great job showing that he has good acting range.
Mary Steenbergen, Dianne Wiest, Rick Moranis, Jason Richards and several others really help to fill out the movie with well-made characters. As it is in life this movie can make you sad, smile, frustrated, or laugh but in the end it all works out pretty well.
