Review of Parenthood (1989) by Jonathan F — 04 Dec 2012
Comedy can reach levels of poignancy and truth that dramas could never hope to achieve. Parenthood, I think, is exceptional in the way that it shows how much work parents put into their kids. The adults, though, aren't completely mature.
Even Jason Robards as the grand old patriarch is prone to moments of 'kid'ness (i.e. when he says of his mother in law "yeah, SHE'S still alive..."). But then there are moments like the one in which Tom Hulce goes to Jason Robards seeking financial assistance when we realise how the oldest generation of this family has, indeed, gained the most wisdom and experience.
And we sense that some day, Steve Martin, who is a very fine son and father, will gain the same insight as his own Dad. I just love this movie. Oh, and it's really really funny.
