Review of Parenthood (1989) by Ashley H — 08 Nov 2013
Parenthood is a beautiful and hilarious movie with a great cast. Even if you aren't a parent, it is still very moving and poignant and deals with the themes of growing up, forgiveness, family, loyalty, compromise, sexuality, puberty, dealing with life's problems and, most importantly, love. Every Buckman family member's story was compelling and moving. My favourite quote from this movie came from Tod (Keanu Reeves): "You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father.".
Every actor delivered a brilliant performance, especially Tom Hulce as the dishonest, irresponsible gambler, Rick Moranis as the demanding, overachieving father and Dianne West, as the mother who loves almost too much and who tries to connect with her two emotionally distant, rebellious teenagers.
Parenthood may be twenty-four years old but it is a classic that people will always be able to relate to.
