Review of Parasomnia (2008) by Jess R — 14 Jun 2009
The idea and concept are very interesting. The beginning of the film started off intriguingly, and managed to captivate me regardless of the not so great and low-budget-like imagery and filming. The intrigue was well created, with the whole mental hospital setting, young hero, sleeping beauty and locked up monster/serial killer.
As soon as we left the mental hospital scenery, the film then started to pick up speed into a cheap and unrealistic horror comedy.
There was a frustrating amount of improbables and unlikeliness.
The middle of the film turned into a laughable gore horror movie.
The dream sequences were interesting, but we feel like it could have been developed further as it was pretty much the same for all the scenes. The characters which appeared in them where well portrayed as far as ugly, scary dream creatures go.
The end scenes of the film had a saw/tim burton wannabe feel to them, but was over the top and bordering the ridicule as most parts of the film.
A real shame, as again the theme was a very interesting one to explore.
The music was well chosen and played the part perfectly, aiding the thriller/horror/suspense feeling throughout the whole film.
