Review of Parasomnia (2008) by Dave S — 08 Aug 2010
Definitely had some moments, and the visuals are occasionally nice. But the whole central premise has issues - not plausibility, but rather that the director doesn't seem to get that the supposedly romantic parts of the movie are actually pretty creepy as well. I mean, the lead woman is such an icky fantasy construction - she barely ever wakes up, and when she does she's childlike and somehow instantly in love with the guy who decided to kidnap her? Trying to romanticize something like this is beyond problematic. Late in the film the villain gets some gross lines about how she's some sort of perfect, innocent angel, but again the film doesn't recognize that the guy we're supposed to be rooting for is into her for the same reasons.
But hey, look, cameos by Alison Brie and Sean Young.
