Review of Paranoid Park (2007) by Matt S — 22 Feb 2009
Gus Van Sant likes to make movies about teenagers and young people in general. Whether or not he's very good at getting into their heads (I feel like more of an expert on the subject, because I am one), I have yet to decide.
But he sure knows how to make it somewhat real, and incredibly beautiful. Paranoid Park does just this, while telling a pretty gripping, if slow-paced tale of an accidental killing. I enjoy how though short, the pacing is intricately slow, allowing each layer of the main character to gracefully peel off.
The acting is rough around the edges, but if you ask me, it adds to the realism. Love him or hate him, Gus Van Sant makes unique movies, and this is a worthy addition to his crop.
