Review of Paprika (1991) by Alex H — 31 Mar 2011
Often hyper-fantastical visuals and generous surreality don't quite make up for Kon's underdeveloped story and shoddy sci-fi mechanics. There seems to be a running weakness of Kon's movies and, to a more forgivable extent, his series, Paranoia Agent: great visual details and often memorable oddities abound, while characters and plot lack inertia.
Still, as always with Kon, Paprika's a fun watch and an admirable-enough final movie - modern anime is lesser without him.
