Review of Papillon (1973) by Lynne N — 24 Jul 2008
A great and highly watchable movie, although I'm guessing a lot of creative licence was used in the re-telling of this 'true life' story. Personally I found it very hard to get past the fact that most of the inmates of the French-owned prison were American.
That aside, McQueen and Hoffman work very well together and turn in great performances - with the aid of a pretty impressive supporting cast. There are some really touching moments in this movie, and scenes that did have me on the edge of my seat.
There are also some scenes that are hard to watch - although the violence is never gratuitous. The discomfort comes more from an empathy you feel for each of the characters in their suffering - which is the sign of a good movie!
