Review of Papillon (1973) by Benjamin P — 23 May 2009
I was thinking this might end up being something along the lines of Shawshank Redemption. In reality, that was probably setting the bar too high, which led to disappointment. In a sense it's the same shell of a plot.
A man wrongly accused of a murder spends his life trying to regain his freedom. The concept is good, and being based on a true story helps to add value. The movie does have it's moments, more so in the first half.
However, it becomes long winded and the direction becomes a little off at points during the second half. I felt the acting was solid for the most part. Overall not that impressed with what should have been a much better film.
