Review of Papillon (1973) by Mike P — 28 Aug 2011
Celebrated as Papillon - after the intricate butterfly tattoo emblazoned on his chest - petty criminal Henri Charriere (STEVE McQUEEN) is framed for murder and transported for life to the penal colony of French Guiana. Imprisoned on infamous Devil's Island, Papillon is obsessed with the idea of freedom. Together with fellow prisoner Louis Dega (DUSTIN HOFFMAN), he ceaselessly works on a means of escape, his spirit refusing to be broken by the savage and humiliating treatment of their captors.
Also stars Don Gordon, Anthony Zerbe, Victor Jory, Robert Deman, Raina Assan, E.J. Andre and Richard Angarola.
Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner.
