Review of Papillon (1973) by Kevin M. W — 06 Nov 2018
Steve McQueen answers his performance in The Great Escape, that of a cool iconoclast loner bucking the system, with this portrayal of another prison escape, this by a much different man. But this is not really a work about escape so much as it is an insight to friendship developed under circumstances and conditions that deny the same.
Written by Dalton Trumbo McQueen and Hoffman are both simply excellent as guys who "friend up" when such brings extreme penalty, and they are the reason to see this. That the score, cinematography and direction are just as good don't hurt any.
