Review of Papillon (1973) by Adam S — 01 Apr 2013
This is a very good classic prison film, a piece of Hollywood history that is built on the solid foundations of performances from Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.
While McQueen's involvement must have brought up inevitable comparisons to the Great Escape, this film now stands on it's own as a great movie, showcasing McQueen's range outside of the "tough guy" he is synonymous with, and also acting as an early vehicle for Dustin Hoffman's storied career.
Some scenes do drag on a bit, but I've found that to be part of the old classics, and merely a symbol of the times, so it's hard to judge that too harshly in this case.
A classic which any film fanatic should have watched at least once.
