Review of Paper Towns (2015) by Andrew D — 23 Jul 2015

I have never read Paper Towns but I did like Fault in our Stars, and I like that John Green seems to be identifying with teen readers. However, I just found Paper Towns irresponsible. First ill start off with what I like.

The film is actually directed with some style and it looked great. I also think Natt Wolf and Cara Delevingne give really good performances, especially Delevingne. She def has a future in acting, she came off very natural.

I also like that the cast actually looked like teenagers, and normal ones at that, no Micheal Bay teenage girls looking sweaty and covered in oil. The only character I had a problem with was one of Quentin's friends.

He was just a turd and very inappropriate, I understand guys act and say gross stuff about women but it doesn't make it OK, and this character constantly does it. It made me uncomfortable, not oh hes such a goofball, which the movies wants you to think of him.

Besides him I liked the rest of the teens. The first half of the movie actually is pretty nice, I like the "adventure" the two go on, but then the second act happens. The ultimate problem I have with the movie was, were the HELL are there parents.

I know its a movie and were suppose to let things just go but this was crazy. They have 2 weeks left of school and they all go on a road trip?????? The one throw away scene we have with the parents knowing about it is that the main character is on the phone with him mom saying "were fine" "i know mom", and "love you too".

WHAT??????? And when we get to the end, the Margot character just comes off as a sociopath. I wont say anything else in case of "spoilers" but its redick!!!!!!! And speaking of throw away scenes, they have tons of them, so they can manipulate us in to liking these characters and buying what there doing.

Maybe i'm just that far away from being 17 anymore but I just found it all crazy and ridiculous. I'm the first person to tell you that being 17 was hard, hell being 13 was, but the message of the movie seemed to be just go for it, go out side your comfort zone, but I found what they were doing irresponsible and the characters come off as spoiled teens who have no one scruples about what there doing because there parents sure don't give a shit.

To me it gives them leeway to be selfish adults with no consequences. Maybe i'm just over thinking it, and maybe i'm "too old" to buy what they were doing.
