Review of Paper Heart (2009) by Ralf L — 13 Aug 2010
It would probably take having a heart as withered as the shrivelled black raisin of Montgomery Burns not to be charmed by Charlyne Yi's debut feature. Shot as a documentary, this gently-paced, often quirky comedy ostensibly chronicles Charlyne's search across America for the meaning of love and her own journey of discovery as she meets - and falls for - her producer's friend, Michael Cera (playing "himself" rather well).
Yi's script is clever, poignant and droll in equal measures and her own earnest goofiness lends an extra layer of likeability to an already very enjoyable experience.
Ok, perhaps some of the interviews are a bit too twee and ok, perhaps not everyone will "get" this movie but for those that do, a tangy, bittersweet treat awaits.
