Review of Panic Room (2002) by Jeremy K — 31 May 2010
Two big problems with most thrillers are extreme implausibilities and cardboard cutouts of characters. Thankfully, "Panic Room" has neither. This is well-casted with Jodie Foster and a young Kristen Stewart, and I did find myself thinking, "This could really happen.
" This movie has a crafty ingenuity to it. There are a lot of movies where there's a crook or a killer in the house, and people inexplicably lock themselves in a room instead of just leaving. But here, the catch is that they have no choice; this room is meant to be a safe haven, but it also becomes something of a prison for our characters.
From there, it becomes a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, where only the quickest and smartest will win. And herein lies another of the movie's strengths: the character interactions. The characters are all very captivating in different ways, and it's a big plus for the purpose of actually caring whether Foster and Stewart live or die.
My main complaints are that it goes a little too long, and some slightly iffy dialogue. But "Panic Room" is definitely one of the better thrillers I've seen; check it out.
