Review of Pandorum (2009) by Karl G — 04 Mar 2011
Pandorum is a tangled up mess of sci-fi mumbo jumbo and the desperate attempt to make a pseudo-philosophical film. Two space cadets awake from the cryo-chamber only find their memories gone and no clue what to do.
The movies jumps back and forth between vague and incomprhensible gibberish about technicalities and the space programe and action scenes which see the crew being chased about by the other occupants of the ship.
The cast is rather bad I dare say, Ben Foster makes this film work and is the only reason I kept watching, all others, especially Antje Traue are painful to behold.
What annoyed me the most about this flick is the desperate attempt to be so overly cool and Matrix-like with huge CGI generated interiors and sped-up fight and chase scenes and everyone looking muscular and cool, I felt like playing a Playstation game. Quantity a CGI does not make up for good ideas and there is not a single location or take in the film that made me interested in the ship or the surroundings at all, unlike other space noir films such as Alien or Moon.
The story is same old same old and you heard it a thousand times before, cabin fever in space, next please.
Alas, a botched effort and I am not sure why Ben Foster wasted his talents on this one. A sci-fi film that is co-founded by Germany ? That is ALWAYS a sure sign to stay away.
