Review of Pandorum (2009) by Jon F — 24 May 2013
Imagine, if you will, a film that mixes Aliens, Event Horizon, Noah's Ark. It provides a few jump moments, makes you think (this, with today's society, may be its downfall), and it doesn't leave you asking too many questions.
You may remember Ben Foster as Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand, or as the cold-blooded henchman in 3:10 to Yuma, but here he gets to really stretch his legs. He portrays an amazing gamut of emotion here, and proves he can be an action star too.
Look for this guy's star to rise even higher. Dennis Quaid does his usual "guy in charge" roll as Lieutenant Payton. He provides communication and support for Ben Foster's Bower. He has some exciting scenes with Cam Gigandet, but I think he's past his action movie prime.
Maybe I'm just biased against anyone who has been in a Twilight movie, but I really don't think Cam Gigandet can act. He has the pissed off pretty boy thing down, but don't ask him to be anything other than what he apparently is.
If Antje Traue did her own stunts, this relative new comer could prove to be very welcome in future action films. This role really didn't give her much of a chance to prove if she could act, but her character definitely knew how to move.
Add all this together and you have a dark, claustrophobic vision of the future that I'm not sorry I paid $12 to see.
