Review of Pandora's Box (2009) by Ben D — 22 Jan 2008
Pandora's Box is a piece of cinema best experienced in a context where all of its workings are understood to a full capacity. That is, the extensive backstory of Wedekind's original play, and the life of actress Louise Brooks.
In debunking the haunting and mythical pathos of Louise Brooks' portrayal of Lulu, one comes to realize that it all stems from her apparent innocence. I believe that this comes from the oddly allegorically biographical nature of the work, in how the story of Lulu reflects the life and times of the actress playing her. It appears almost as if they are extensions of the same reality, the line where one begins and the other ends blurred. And, this knowledge is what makes the film so interesting. Without it, it is average expressionist German cinema.
