Moonlight is not only a product of its time in the sociopolitical sense, but it is also a film that exemplifies the advancements made in cannes-style cinematography and dramatic narration, which is both its biggest accomplishment as well as its biggest shackle, rendering the film a step forward, but hardly a revolution of any kind.
