After so many renditions of Peter Pan it's hard to see the necessity of this film besides the fact of wanting to understand Pan's origins and the origin of Captain Hook, but neither are fully explored as one would expect.
The fact that the director was open to sequels to further explore the story shows you his non-committal to this piece of material.
