Review of Palo Alto (2014) by Ramses C — 29 Jan 2015
What a lot of people don't understand is that a movie or a short story or anything, really, doesn't need to follow the conventional code. This movie doesn't really have an inciting incident or rising actions, a climax or epiphany.
Not all characters are fully developed, and we only really see a few of their faces. But following this kind of structure seems really historic and not progressive. This movie is a great example of how successful something can be without following the predetermined guidelines.
So, no, while there's no real story being told here, people need to understand that that is simply part of it. It's a "story" of teens who are quasi-lost and wandering. The fact that the structure of the movie isn't polished mimics the "story" being told.
The movie keeps you interested, concerned for these teens. With a slight discomfort while watching, it captures your interest and begs to relate. Really well adapted from Franco's book.
