Review of Palo Alto (2014) by Seth Y — 24 Feb 2015
There is nothing new or groundbreaking about Palo Alto, but I enjoyed this film. I hadn't heard many positive things about it, so I wasn't expecting much (which may be why I had a good time with it).
Based on James Franco's collection of short stories about teenage life, Gia Coppola's directorial debut is an extremely realistic entry into the coming of age genre. The highlight of this film is the impressive performances (including Franco himself).
Emma Roberts, who is the main reason I even checked this out, really shines. Sometimes I struggle to get into these types of movies because they feel so forced and fake, but I didn't get that with this film.
It's well shot, haunting, and almost poetic at times. Really impressed with this one.
