Review of Palindromes (2005) by Chris S — 23 Nov 2005
This is one of the two movies introduced to me by my friend ThirdMan this weekend. He?ll usually review these movies himself during the week and I never really get the chance to see them. I just don?t have the means to go out and rent these. But on occasion ThirdMan will buy movies like this, or something else will happen and I get a chance to see them.
Palindromes is one crazy movie to review let alone explain. After the death of a family friend due to an unwanted baby, a young Aivia sets out to get a baby herself. Jump forward a some years and with a completely different looking girl, Aivia succeeds in becoming pregnant. But her mother believes her to be too young, and scares Aivia into having an abortion. From there Aivia decides to leave home and continue her work at having a child. This leads her on a very interesting adventure.
Now one thing I said was that the actress completely changed. This happens more then once throughout Palindromes. Its and interesting affect, and one that makes sense as you think about it. I see it as different stages in Aivia?s character. Now most actors/actresses can play multiple characters, but this effect allows us to see subtle changes in character very bluntly.
Now as much as I like that direction, and acting, I only can like the story so much. I?m not saying its bad, but I just thought it was so sad it disturbing like that?s all it was trying to be. I never felt happy for these people. I?m not saying that I should always fill happy for the characters. I just think there should be a bit more point. I wish I could explain it better, but I?m giving this a high score cus I really didn?t see this as that big of a set back, I still really liked the movie.
