Review of Palestine Stereo (2014) by Byron B — 28 Apr 2014
I saw this at the Cleveland International Film Festival 2014. Two brothers try to raise money to leave war-torn Palestine for Canada. One brother, nicknamed Stereo, is an ex-wedding singer. The other brother, Sami, is deaf and mute after a bomb destroyed Stereo's apartment while Sami was there.
Stereo's wife was killed in the bombing too. The film attempts to be poetic in portraying how the two men might face and overcome their grief. There are humorous moments as the brothers work as sound engineers.
It succeeds in telling a humanistic story from the perspective of Palestinians on the opposite side of the Israeli conflict. A culture that we rarely get to see in the west.
