Review of Bull Durham (1988) by Byron B — 15 Jul 2018
Baseball is my favorite sport to watch (although American Ninja Warrior is taking most of my attention lately). As a kid I loved baseball movies like The Sandlot and the remake of Angels in the Outfield.
I finally made the effort to watch two of the most popular 80s baseball flicks starring Kevin Costner, this and Field of Dreams. In this R rated sports flick billed as a comedy, which I find questionable because I wasn't laughing much, an aging player and a young hotshot both have a relationship with the same groupie.
The short lived TV show Pitch about a woman pitcher joining a major league team plays with the same clichéd old and young player dynamics. Sarandon's Annie opens the movie by comparing baseball to religion and the movie's writer-director Shelton seems to think he's making profound remarks about relationships through this love triangle device.
I simply wasn't rooting for any of the three main characters. The movie was full of bull.
