Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Don F — 23 Mar 2018
What a mess of a movie. If I was rating only the CGI effects, this would easily get 4.5 stars. Unfortunately a movie also needs effective acting, an effective storyline, and effective directing. I'm feeling the producers forgot about all of those three with Uprising.
Boyega is just not a good actor. He neither convinced me that he was a genuine rebel or genuine leader. Spaeny was a bit more effective, however, her character was predictable and someone we've seen over and over and over again.
It was nice to see a vastly diverse cast, though, so I give Uprising credit for that. The storyline felt unclear the entire movie. For 75% of the movie, I kept thinking, "so, what's the purpose here".
When finally revealed, it was so implausible and nonsensical I felt a collective eye roll in the theater. Okay, it may have just been me, but I remember thinking, "Well, that's so out of left field".
Even getting to that point, we had to jump over so many plot holes that it was like hopscotch. It's sad to say this because I loved the first Pacific Rim movie, with Hunnam and Elba playing much more convincing parts.
