Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Kaleb V — 28 Mar 2018
It doesn't live up to the first movie not by a long shot and I love the pacific rim. in the first movie, the kaiju was ever present, even when they were not showing them you could feel the tension and the futility of the efforts against the kaiju. In the second movie, the kaiju seemed like a footnote and focused more on the cadets which I didn't remember any of their names. Even when the kaiju did show up, IT DIDN'T FEEL MONSTERS.
THE FIGHT SCENES IN THE FIRST MOVIE WERE ALSO VERY TENSE COMPARED THE THE SEQUEL. THE OPENING OF THE FIRST MOVIE WAS FANTASTIC, YOU COULD FEEL THE DESPAIR AND THE HELPLESSNESS OF FIGHTING A KAIJU WHEN THINGS TURNED SOUTH, IN THE SECOND MOVIE, NOT SO MUCH. iT FELT LIKE THE ALL PILOTS WERE GONNA SURVIVE AND IF THEY DIDN'T, WELL YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THEIR NAME SO YOU DIDN'T EVEN FEEL ATTACHED.
THE REVELATION OF THE OBJECTIVE OF THE KAIJU WAS ALSO VERY WEAK AND iT FELT LIKE IT WAS MADE UP ON THE SPOT SINCE THE ATTACKS WERE ALWAYS SPREAD OUT IN THE FIRST MOVIE.
TO FINISH UP THIS REVIEW IS THE ENDING, THE ENDING WAS VERY UNSATISFYING AND THE BUILD UP TO IT WAS VERY WEAK COMPARED TO THE FIRST MOVIE. THIS ENDING RELIED NOT ON A EPIC FIGHT FULL OF LOSS, TRIUMPH, AND GRIT, BUT PURELY LUCK AND CONVENIENCE . I LOVE THE FIRST MOVIE SOOOO MUCH, BUT THE SEQUEL DOESN'T EVEN COME CLOSE AND THAT'S HEARTBREAKING.
