Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Leilei Q — 30 Mar 2018
I went in with high base expectations, but low actual expectations based on the audience reviews. I particularly loved the review "Written and Directed by a Kaiju" that made me crack up. Anyway - I was extremely pleasantly surprised!!! I REALLY enjoyed it.
I loved the Narrative and the characters. It was super-anime-esque, way more than the first one and functioned sort of like the Power Rangers, assembling a motley crew of relatable heroes and throwing them in a crazy anime situation.
It really worked and I thought the dialogue writing was sharp. Parts were slightly cheesy, but could have been infinitely more so. The art and concept design was sensational, the action really made you feel immersed in the film, and the scale was epic.
I'd have to give this movie an 85%. It had room for improvement, but I'm truly delighted it didn't disappoint.
