One wonders how a sequel is going to deal with the excruciating amount of pipe laid down by del Toro's original film and the answer seems to be "doubling down on the needless exposition." That said, the film understands that a more diverse cast was needed and a more interesting plot as well; on the first point it's a more successful, on the second it's a wash.
