Review of Pacific Rim (2013) by Bill M — 05 Jul 2014

Pacific Rim is pure candy, it's the film of every boys fevered dreams, it's certainly the movie i've been waiting for since I was a kid. It's pure, cartoon, sci-fi pleasure. There are a couple of issues, namely that there is far too much time spent with the human characters in the middle of the film, and we get not much in the way of robo/monster mashing for a good long while, now im usually all for character development in genre films, but here the main duo of Raleigh and Mako arnt particularly interesting characters, you do care a bit if they cark it or not but they dont hold the interest much.

Luckily the very cool Idris Elba is kickass as the wonderfully named Stacker Pentecost, booming out the now famous CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE! line, and Charlie Day is funny and likable as a mad scientist/monster expert.

The action as well isnt just awes inspiringly huge and spectacular, it's beautiful and stylish, look at the neon hued fight in Hong Kong for instance, and the look of the monsters is outright trippy with their glow in the dark mouths and blood.

A near perfect summer movie with an incredible sense of scale and pure fun.
