Review of Pacific Rim (2013) by Brendan J — 16 Nov 2014
It took me awhile to finally see this movie and I'm sorry I waited. Guillermo Del Toro didn't disappoint. The special effects were very well executed and some of the best I've seen in a monster movie.
Obviously most people would compare this film to Godzilla, but to me it seems more like Guillermo was taking cues from the anime mecha series, Evangelion. Very similar basis, but very notable differences as well.
Other than Transformers; this is really the first time a mecha themed live action movie of this nature, with this big of a budget/release has been made. It's great to see how well this film was executed.
Nothing seems overly cartoon-ish, especially the cockpit scenes. Having the actors in actual cockpit sets, instead of on green screen, makes the fighting that much more believable. I didn't expect anything less from Del Toro.
The cast was very well picked and helps to make this an amazing thrill ride. Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi make an amazing team, with very natural chemistry. The comedic relief from Charlie Day and Burn Gorman also help to ground the film.
It doesn't take itself too seriously at all times, which makes this one of the best popcorn action flicks I've seen.
