Pacific Rim is one of these type of films that will remind you from your childhood dreams of robots fighting monsters. It's proven the point certain exactly.

While the plot is somewhat obvious and the action/fighting sequences, musical score and visual effects being the top-notches. Director Gel Toro has shown Michael Bay on how to make a film with giant robots look like a total badass (with a little extra feature of giant monsters to help support the film).

While Pacific Rim might not everyone in the audience, it will certainly be seen (by some) as a tribute somewhat from both industries of Transformers and Godzilla respectively.
