Review of Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) by Jason U — 31 May 2014
Back when I was a complete film snob, I never wanted to admit that casting is 80% of directing. Now, I can. And the cast in Oz, more or less, saves the movie from being a dud. For me.
I think it's interesting that efforts were made for continuity between this one and the Wizard of Oz, (see the appearance of the Wicked Witch and of Oz's whole image projection set-up.) Yet, the choice was made to NOT make this one a musical. Weird. Then again, director Sam Raimi has always had a weird sense of continuity.
Without spoiling too much, I believe this flick's biggest flaw is establishing the Wicked One as a sympathetic character. She gets Anakin Skywalker'd. I say that's a mistake.
Again though, awesome cast. Great visuals. A few great moments.
