Review of Owning Mahowny (2003) by Kai L — 27 Jan 2008
Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant as Dan Mahowny, an assistant bank manager from Toronto, who as he pust it himself doesn't have a gambling problem but a financial problem. With his debts growing he starts to gamble in casinos instead of race-tracks.
The catch is that the money he gambles isn't his own but the bank's that he's working for. Based on a true story set in 1980-82, about how everything else loses its meaning when being possessed by gambling.
The legendary John Hurt has a great suppprting role as a casino owner in Atlantic City, who's happy as long as the casino receives more than they pay out but is at the same time aware of what it does to the lives of the gamblers.
Worth checking out.
