Review of Owning Mahowny (2003) by Dustin G — 31 Aug 2011
This one should be shown in schools for anti-gambling reasons the way Kids used to be for anti-sex reasons or Basketball Diaries for anti-drug.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing and shows why he's ALWAYS been one of the best actors alive for as long as he's been making films, playing a banker who embezzles millions from his bank to support a gambling habit. Minnie Drive is tolerable, which is a step up from how she usually is, as his girlfriend who stands by him through the think and thin and her loyalty and understanding is touching.
Overall just a fantastic, well told true story that is one of the better gambling movies, and one of the better Canadian movies, out there.
