Review of Overlord (2018) by Nathan W — 09 Nov 2018
WOW, what an amazing hybrid of a film, and I honestly don't think the trailers do it any justice. A wild ride to experience, produced by J. J. Abrams through Bad Robot, this film is a perfect blend of an action-packed WWII action film, and a terrifying horror zombie/monster flick. Julius Avery directs a hell of a film, a Wolfenstein-type feel with some absolutely incredible camerawork. On the technical side of things, this is a beautifully shot film; there are some unbelievable long take tracking shots, which had my jaw on the ground.
What I really loved about this story, without saying too much to spoil anything (because I definitely want you all to check this one out) is what the cast brings to the table in their characters. Being a WWII film surrounding the horror and zombie action, the camaraderie between the soldiers feels so authentic, when it could have just as easily felt forced and cheesy. Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn), Jovan Adepo, and John Magaro are fantastic in their roles; they really add something extra to this story by way of both genres here, the war and horror aspects. This is a hard-R, scary, bloody, grindhouse action/horror flick that knows exactly what it is, and I had so much fun with it. Really a pleasant surprise this late in the year.
