Review of Overheard (2009) by Akash G — 05 Feb 2010
Low expectations work in directors Mak & Chong's favour in Overheard, which signals a possible return to former grandness. The thriller format with a minimum of action seems to fit the duo well, and the suspense is handled pretty expertly.
The screenplay has some well-written characters and the actual thrill of Overheard mainly consists of catching the good guys gradually slip and wondering how far. The ensemble cast also makes the most out of the written material, Lau Ching Wan being his most professional self here.
Flaws include some apparent miscasting and a SARFT-friendly karmic ending. But we're at least spared the embarassment of watching righteous mainland cops being sent in to catch the bad guys.
