Review of Overboard (1987) by David G — 20 Jul 2009
The awesome thing about Overboard is that Kurt Russell's character is such an asshole! I mean he kidnaps Goldie Hawn, breaking I don't know how many laws - sure she was a bitch to him but that's no excuse! - he takes advantage of her, tricks her into doing his dirty work, and it's all a big joke to him.
His morality is fucked up all to hell and back! Yet despite all this you still love the guy! I mean it's Kurt freakin' Russell how can you not? Hell the movie opens with him chopping up wood with a chainsaw to a classic 80's beat wearing a muscle shirt and dungarees, how much more rad can you get?! OK I'm kidding around but that's what happens when the two greatest things in the universe - the 80's and Kurt Russell - come together, I just get overexcited.
So yeah, Overboard is a great watch - Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, the dopey story, the overblown rich folk stereotypes... it's a lot of fun. The annoying kids are the only negative aspect, especially the Pee-wee Herman one.
