Review of Overboard (1987) by Chrissy S — 16 Apr 2011
Is Overboard predictable? Yes. Is the plot a formula that has been used hundreds of times on screens large and small. Yup. Is this movie silly? Oh yeah. Does it really matter? Nope.
Overboard tells the tale of rich and shrewish Joanna (Goldie Hawn) who berates and belittles everyone in reach. She has an equally awful husband Grant (Edward Hermann) and they hate each other. But that's normal in relationships between the rich, right? In a small Oregon town for repairs on their luxury yacht, Joanna makes the mistake of abusing cartpenter Dean (Kurt Russell)and it comes back to haunt her.
Overboard is just silly and fun and if watched that way is entertainment in its purest form. Even though you can predict each and every plot twist almost scene by scene, you can't predict the snappy dialogue and the delight in watching Goldie Hawn play the epitome of uptight bitch: "Everyone wants to be me!".
For those of you who can leave the finer points of filmdom behind and want a pleasant, charming, and amusing couple of hours of family friendly entertainment then Overboard just might be the movie for you.
