Review of Outlaw King (2018) by Milhouse V — 09 Nov 2018
This is essentially a sequel to Braveheart, following the events of Scotland's Robert the Bruce shortly after the execution of William Wallace. Like its predecessor, it does take some liberties with history and romanticizes them for the sake of a compelling story.
While Outlaw King does offer up the same bloody battle scenes, it is not able to reach the scope and visceral emotion that made Braveheart so good. Granted, David Mackenzie most likely didn't have the same budget as Mel Gibson, and there are few filmmakers out there that have Gibson's talent.
That is not a knock on Mackenzie by any means, but should be taken into perspective--Outlaw King is no Braveheart, It is far closer to a "made-for-TV" rendition of it instead. That being said, Mackenzie makes the most of what he has and successfully creates an interesting and entertaining story.
It's certainly worth the watch, but will ultimately fade into a sea of banality over time.
